During a recent Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump shared an amusing anecdote about negotiating with the Sharpie maker for personalized pens, pricing them at $5 each. However, the company, Newell Brands, has refuted the claim, stating that no such exchange occurred.
Trump's story unfolded as he was discussing various topics, including his plans for the renovation of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and critiques of the Federal Reserve headquarters. He diverted attention to a black permanent marker he was holding, describing it as an inexpensive yet effective writing tool.
According to Trump, he reached out to the Sharpie manufacturer to discuss a more official appearance for the pens, especially as he signed significant contracts. "I can't have a great thing with a big S on it saying Sharpie as I'm signing a $1 trillion airplane contract," he recounted.
In his narrative, Trump claimed the Sharpie representative offered to customize the pens, suggesting options such as painting them black or adding gold details, including his signature. The president insisted on paying for the pens, despite the representative's insistence that it was an honor to provide them free of charge.
"I said, 'No, I want to pay you. How about five bucks a pen?'" Trump recalled, to which the representative allegedly agreed. However, Newell Brands was quick to clarify that this conversation did not take place, emphasizing their pride in being a globally trusted brand.
The White House has not provided further details to clarify Trump's account, including the identity of the individual he purportedly spoke with. This incident adds to the ongoing scrutiny regarding Trump's tendency to embellish stories, a characteristic that has been noted throughout his presidency.
As this whimsical negotiation tale circulates, it raises questions about the broader implications of such anecdotes on public perception and trust in political figures.
