South Dakota State University (SDSU) is taking a significant step towards preparing its students for an increasingly AI-driven world by establishing the Center for AI Innovation and Emergent Technologies. This initiative aims to enhance AI literacy and promote ethical innovation across various fields of study at the university.
SDSU President Barry Dunn emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating that graduates must be proficient with AI tools while understanding their ethical implications. "AI is rapidly transforming our world, and we must ensure that South Dakotans are not just observers of the AI revolution, but active builders and beneficiaries of it," he noted.
The new center will integrate generative AI literacy and competency initiatives into the university's curriculum. Senator Mike Rounds, who secured $750,000 in federal funding for the center through the 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies bill, remarked on the center's timely establishment. He highlighted the importance of teaching students to harness AI's potential rather than shy away from it.
The center will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary AI-based research groups tackling pressing issues such as agriculture, climate resilience, and rural health. This collaborative environment aims to foster innovative solutions to challenges faced by communities in South Dakota and beyond.
Victor Taylor, the vice provost for graduate education and extended studies and co-executive director of the center, stated that producing "generative AI-literate" graduates will enhance South Dakota's reputation as a center for technological innovation. He added that the center’s initiatives will ensure that students are equipped to navigate the ethical landscapes of AI technology.
Rajesh Kavasseri, another co-executive director and associate dean for research, also emphasized the center's role in transforming research practices. He described the goal as creating a new "operating system for discovery," where AI serves as a "force multiplier" to accelerate research processes and broaden their impact.
