Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has expressed skepticism regarding the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the video game industry. In a recent interview, he labeled the idea that AI could empower anyone to create blockbuster games like Grand Theft Auto 6 as "laughable" and emphasized that human creativity is irreplaceable in the game development process.
Zelnick's remarks came in response to the launch of Google's Project Genie, an AI tool designed to generate interactive worlds from text prompts. While this technology can create environments that resemble popular games, he argued that generating a fully interactive and engaging experience requires more than just technological advancements. "Creating a hit of that magnitude is a completely different animal and does require human engagement and creativity," Zelnick stated.
He noted that the market's initial reaction to Project Genie suggested it could threaten existing game development paradigms. "I was stunned by the market's reaction, because it's quite obvious that creation tools are beneficial for our industry," he remarked. However, he asserted that while AI can assist in developing assets, it does not guarantee the creation of successful games. "Thousands of mobile games are launched every year, and there are only a handful of hits," he pointed out.
Zelnick further explained that the current landscape of game development is already saturated with technology that allows for the rapid creation of games. Despite the influx of new tools, most successful titles continue to emerge from established entertainment companies or well-funded indie developers. He reiterated that the notion that anyone could push a button and generate a hit is unrealistic. "It's just never been the case with entertainment," he emphasized.
Regarding the specific applications of AI in game development, Zelnick acknowledged that these tools could be beneficial in certain areas, such as storyboarding and exploring plot points. He described these capabilities as more effective than traditional methods, like conducting internet searches. However, he remains cautious about the broader implications of AI in the creative process. "Ultimately, it's the same thing. It all depends on your expectations," he explained.
Zelnick's perspective contrasts sharply with other industry leaders who have embraced AI as a core component of their business strategies. While companies like EA and Square Enix have begun integrating AI technologies into their operations, Zelnick maintains that Take-Two will not rely on generative AI for its marquee titles, including the much-anticipated GTA 6. "Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building," he confirmed.
He also highlighted that the entertainment industry's history shows that new technologies often coexist with traditional business models rather than replace them. For instance, despite the rise of digital media, live entertainment continues to thrive, illustrating the enduring value of human creativity and engagement in the arts. "Every entertainment business that was supposed to be destroyed by new technology hasn't been," Zelnick stated, citing the continued popularity of live performances.
As Take-Two prepares for the release of GTA 6, scheduled for November 19, 2026, Zelnick remains focused on maintaining the company's legacy of high-quality game development. "We stay engaged with the kind of entertainment we fell in love with at the age of 17," he noted, reflecting on the importance of connecting with audiences through compelling storytelling and immersive gameplay experiences.
