Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has taken a firm stand against the notion that AI technologies, such as Google's Project Genie, can autonomously create successful video games. In a recent interview with The Game Business, Zelnick described this idea as "laughable," emphasizing that the complexities involved in developing hit games require a level of human engagement and creativity that current AI tools cannot replicate.
Google's Project Genie, which allows users to generate 3D virtual worlds from text prompts, has stirred significant interest and concern within the gaming industry. Following the announcement of the AI tool, many video game companies, including Take-Two, experienced notable drops in their stock prices, leading to fears that AI could disrupt traditional game development.
Zelnick expressed surprise at the market's reaction, stating that he views AI creation tools as beneficial rather than threatening. He noted, "I was kind of stunned by the market's reaction... when it's quite obvious that creation tools are beneficial for our industry." He elaborated that while AI can aid in asset creation, it does not equate to the ability to produce hits, which remain clustered among major entertainment companies.
The Take-Two CEO argued that technology has always played a role in enhancing entertainment but pointed out that simply generating assets does not lead to successful game titles. "There are loads of assets out there now," he said, "and thousands of mobile games are launched every year, yet only a handful become hits." This reinforces his stance that the creative process is inherently human and cannot be replaced by automated tools.
Zelnick further illustrated his skepticism by comparing AI-generated music to professionally produced songs. He remarked that while AI can create something that resembles a song, it often lacks the depth and engagement needed for repeated enjoyment. "It's great to send as a greeting card to your partner on their birthday, but that's about it," he quipped.
In discussing the limitations of Project Genie, Zelnick highlighted that the tool currently generates simple interactive experiences with resolutions and frame rates that are insufficient for modern gaming standards. He reiterated that creating a fully interactive and engaging game world is a "completely different animal" that requires human creativity and vision.
