REI Co-op is making significant strides in its climate action efforts, focusing on renewable energy projects and the use of sustainable materials. In 2025, the co-op has implemented various initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact and supporting the health of the communities it serves.
A cornerstone of REI's sustainability strategy is its commitment to local clean energy projects. This includes a new 2.5MW community solar project in Woodbury, Minnesota, developed by US Solar. The co-op has signed a three-year agreement with Ambercycle to purchase 200 tons per year of cycora® regenerated polyester, which is made from recycled textile waste. The co-op's Director of Sustainability, Andrew Dempsey, emphasized the importance of collaboration in driving climate action.
