Carolina Complete Health and the Centene Foundation have officially broken ground on a significant affordable housing initiative in Northeast Winston-Salem. This project, which is part of the Winston-Salem Choice Neighborhood initiative, involves a $2 million investment to rebuild 244 housing units.

The announcement was made on March 27, 2026, during a ceremony attended by representatives from ASPIRE and the City of Winston-Salem. The partnership aims to enhance community health by focusing on the development of Cleveland Avenue Homes, where the new housing will be located.

According to Chris E. Paterson, Ph.D., president and CEO of Carolina Complete Health, the organization is committed to addressing various drivers of health. “That starts with ensuring that all North Carolinians have access to both quality housing and healthcare,” he stated. He emphasized that this investment demonstrates their dedication to creating opportunities for families to thrive through long-term health, empowerment, and resilience.

The funding will enable below-market-rate loans, which will help accelerate predevelopment, planning, and community engagement in the area. Carolina Complete Health will also play a crucial role by providing community health expertise, aiming to remove barriers to care for families living in the neighborhood.

Richard Baron, co-founder and chairman of McCormack Baron Salazar, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “Partnerships are at the heart of McCormack Baron's work to support and strengthen communities.” He highlighted the aim of connecting residents in the Winston-Salem neighborhoods to crucial health services and programs.

The initiative is designed not only to replace aging housing units but also to revitalize the community with new mixed-income housing. The partnership will connect residents to essential healthcare services, address community needs, and provide access to vital resources such as workforce development initiatives, employment pathways, healthy food, and nutrition education.
